Received a DAS End-of-Life or End-of-Support Notice? Here’s What to Do Next
Receiving an end-of-life or end-of-support notice related to an in-building distributed antenna system does not automatically mean the entire DAS needs to be replaced.
It does mean something in the system or carrier relationship is changing.
The notice may involve active DAS equipment, software, replacement-part support, a carrier signal source, a network technology, supported spectrum, or another component of the in-building cellular ecosystem.
The first question should therefore not be:
“Do we need a new DAS?”
It should be:
“What exactly is reaching end of life, when does the change take effect, and what does it mean for our building?”
For building owners, IT leaders, facilities teams, healthcare systems, campuses, commercial real estate organizations, and other enterprises, the objective is to understand the impact early enough to protect service continuity and make a deliberate lifecycle decision.
A DAS end-of-life or end-of-support notice is a planning trigger, not an automatic replacement order. The right response depends on what is actually being retired, which carrier services are affected, and how that component fits into the complete system. Some infrastructure may remain fully usable, while other equipment may require remediation, a signal-source transition, targeted upgrades, phased modernization, or replacement. Evaluating the notice early gives the organization more options to protect service continuity.
What Does a DAS End-of-Life or End-of-Support Notice Mean?
There is no single type of DAS lifecycle notice.
Depending on who issued it and what equipment is involved, the notice may mean that:
- A manufacturer is discontinuing a hardware platform
- Software or firmware support is ending
- Replacement parts will no longer be available
- Carrier-owned equipment is being retired
- A signal source feeding the DAS is being removed or changed
- An older network technology is being decommissioned
- Certain frequency capabilities are no longer sufficient
- A support or service model is ending

These conditions are related, but they are not the same.
That distinction matters because the right response to a discontinued remote unit may be very different from the response to a carrier signal-source shutdown.

Headend and active DAS equipment

Software and management systems
The hardware may continue operating while software, firmware, alarm systems, or management tools are no longer supported.
Fiber and coaxial infrastructure
Physical distribution infrastructure may remain usable well beyond the supported life of the active electronics.
Antennas and passive RF components
Some antennas, splitters, couplers, tappers, and other passive elements may remain viable if they support the frequencies and performance requirements of the future system.
Building infrastructure
Pathways, equipment rooms, racks, power, conduit, rooftop access, and other physical assets can represent substantial portions of the original investment and may remain useful during modernization.
Evaluate the DAS layer by layer rather than assuming every part of the system has reached end of life at the same time.
Step 1: Read the Notice Carefully
Start with the document itself.
Capture:
- Who issued the notice
- Which property or system is affected
- Affected equipment or model numbers
- Technologies or services being retired
- Carrier references
- Frequency-band references
- Support-expiration dates
- Shutdown or decommissioning dates
- Required owner actions
- Carrier or OEM contacts
- Any proposed transition path
The most important information may be the effective date.
If the notice includes a firm shutdown or decommissioning date, treat that date as a coverage-continuity deadline, not simply an administrative milestone.
The objective is to understand what needs to be in place before that date arrives.
Step 2: Determine Whether the Notice Affects the DAS, the Signal Source, or Both
This is one of the most important distinctions to make.
A DAS distributes cellular signal throughout a building.
It does not create carrier signal on its own.
That signal must come from a source.
Depending on the deployment, the signal may come from carrier-provided radio or base-station equipment, an off-air source, a managed signal-source solution, or another carrier-approved arrangement.
If the notice affects the signal source rather than the distribution system, the antennas, cabling, fiber, pathways, and portions of the DAS may remain physically viable.
But without a replacement source, that carrier’s service cannot continue to be distributed through the system.
Likewise, replacing the signal source does not automatically solve limitations in an aging DAS.
The source and the distribution platform both need to support the carrier’s current technical requirements.
A carrier signal-source shutdown is important enough to warrant deeper analysis, but it should always be evaluated as part of the overall lifecycle picture.
Step 3: Determine Which Carrier Services Are Actually at Risk
A notice may affect only one carrier.
That distinction is especially important in a multi-carrier DAS.
For example, if one carrier removes or retires its signal source, the DAS may continue providing service for other participating carriers whose sources remain active.
Document:
- Which carrier issued the notice
- Which carriers currently participate in the DAS
- Whether carriers use separate signal sources
- Whether they share the same distribution infrastructure
- Which users or operations depend on the affected carrier
- Whether the building plans to add or change carrier support
This helps separate a carrier-specific lifecycle event from a systemwide infrastructure issue.
Step 4: Establish the Current DAS Baseline
Before deciding what should change, determine what is actually installed.
Useful information includes:
- As-built drawings
- Equipment inventories
- Manufacturer and model information
- Headend diagrams
- Remote-unit information
- Signal-source documentation
- Carrier agreements
- Antenna layouts
- Fiber and coaxial pathways
- Commissioning reports
- Previous RF test results
- Monitoring credentials
- Alarm records
- Maintenance history
- Previous upgrade documentation
Older systems often have incomplete records.
That does not mean the DAS must be replaced.

Step 5: Determine Who Owns and Supports the Affected Equipment

Determine whether affected equipment is:
- Carrier-owned
- Building-owned
- Third-party-owned

Also identify who currently:
- Monitors the system
- Receives alarms
- Performs maintenance
- Has administrative credentials
- Coordinates repairs
- Communicates with the carrier
- Owns the distribution infrastructure
- Owns or operates the signal source
This is often harder than it sounds.
In legacy systems, the original carrier program, integrator relationship, ownership structure, or operating model may have changed several times since installation.
A lifecycle notice is a good time to resolve those responsibilities.
Step 6: Evaluate What Can Remain in Service
An EOL or EOS notice does not automatically erase the remaining value in the existing system.
Potentially reusable infrastructure may include:
- Fiber
- Coaxial cabling
- Antennas
- Pathways and conduit
- Equipment rooms
- Racks
- Power infrastructure
- Passive RF components
- Portions of the headend or distribution architecture
Reuse can potentially reduce:
- Construction disruption
- Ceiling work
- Installation labor
- Material replacement
- Project duration
- Operational impact
But reuse should be engineered rather than assumed.
An existing antenna or coaxial run may still be physically intact but not support the frequencies, loss requirements, or architecture needed for a future system.
Similarly, active equipment may be functional but no longer supported or compatible with current carrier requirements.
The correct question is not:
“Can we keep the old equipment?”
It is:
“Which parts of the current system still provide a sound technical and operational foundation?”
Step 7: Evaluate Current Carrier and Technology Requirements
An EOL notice may expose issues that extend beyond the component named in the notice.
The existing DAS should also be evaluated against the carrier environment it needs to support now.
Relevant questions can include:
- Does the system support the required LTE and 5G spectrum?
- Are important carrier bands missing?
- Can the existing platform support current signal-source requirements?
- Is capacity sufficient?
- Does the architecture allow required carrier upgrades?
- Are supported replacement components still available?
- Is the system still aligned with the building’s current needs?
For example, an LTE-era DAS may still provide strong service while lacking important mid-band 5G support.
That does not necessarily mean the system must be replaced, but it may affect whether investing in an older platform is still practical.

What Are the Possible Outcomes After a DAS EOL or EOS Notice?
The answer should depend on what the evaluation finds.
Monitor & Maintain
If the affected change does not create an immediate operational problem and the system remains supportable, the organization may continue operating while establishing the appropriate maintenance and lifecycle plan.
Remediate

Replace or Transition the Signal Source
If the signal source is the primary lifecycle issue, the organization may be able to establish a new carrier-approved source while retaining compatible portions of the existing DAS.
Enhance or Upgrade

Lifecycle Plan
If the system remains functional but several lifecycle constraints are emerging, a phased modernization strategy may allow the organization to spread investment over time and coordinate changes with carrier activity, renovations, or capital budgets.
Replace

Does an EOL Notice Mean You Need a New DAS?

- What remains supported
- What infrastructure still has useful life

What If There Is No Firm Shutdown Date?

- What signal source exists today?
- Who owns and supports the affected equipment?
- What infrastructure can remain?
