Metropolitan Airports Commission: Private Cellular Proof of Concept

As a leader in the aviation industry, the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) commissioned a PCN (Private Cellular Network) Proof of Concept (PoC) at Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport (MSP). The goal was to test functionality of an LTE network using CBRS spectrum for airport operations. A PCN using 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) cellular technology was installed at MSP to test the performance of a variety of operational use cases. The use cases detailed in the attached CaseStudy include: Airside Maintenance Tracking; Common Use System Equipment (CUSE) carts for passenger processing; digital signage; video surveillance; critical infrastructure

The Need for Reliable Wireless Connectivity in Airports

The world relies heavily on wireless connectivity, and airports are no exception. However, airports present unique challenges for wireless networks due to the variety of construction materials, complex infrastructure, large physical footprint, and high levels of passenger traffic. The demand for seamless and reliable wireless connectivity at airports has been increasing dramatically, prompting airport operators to explore communications network options, including Wi-Fi, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS), and Private Cellular Networks (PCNs). This paper will discuss how airports can meet the connectivity demands imposed on them by diverse stakeholders, including airport operations, airlines, vendors, and passengers.
